    LINK Scheme Administration

Cash machines are by far the most popular channel for cash withdrawal in the UK, used by millions of consumers every week.

The LINK network is the UK's national cash machine (ATM) interchange network, and a fundamental part of the UK's payments infrastructure.  There are over 105 million LINK-enabled cards in circulation, issued by 38 financial institutions. Over 60, 000 ATMs are connected to the LINK network - effectively every ATM in the UK.

VocaLink supplies technology services to members of the UK ATM interchange scheme.  We operate the busiest ATM transaction switching platform in the world; at peak, the platform processes almost 1 million transactions per hour.

The LINK ATM Scheme ensures universal, reliable and secure access to cash and maintains and enforces fair rules for technical standards, interchange, charging and signage. The administration of the scheme covers a number of activities including:

    • Membership Services:  defining the rules of participation by members and sponsored institutions such as certified service bureaux, ensuring adherence to the rules, and including the notification of fees to members
    • Supplier management: supporting members in the selection of  technology services suppliers and specifying requirements for enhancements and new developments
    • Compliance: identifying relevant national and international legislative requirements such as the SEPA Cards Framework and the implications for the scheme and its members, and maintaining compliance with international card scheme standards.
    • Industry representation: representing the membership at industry meetings such as regular steering meetings for international card scheme compliance, at seminars arranged by other industry bodies, forums and in the media.
    • Strategic development: providing market intelligence, statistical analysis and insights to members to aid strategic planning and the development of industry initiatives.

Administering the scheme requires a deep industry understanding and practical skills.  It is a multi-dimensional role calling upon diverse skills to inform thinking and shape scheme strategy. All of our visionary thinkers and specialist technicians are at the service of the industry.
